A practicing mage for most of his life, Kitaru is skilled in healing magic and protective wards. He lives deep within the forest surrounding the town of Rimehollow with Mochi, his ermine familiar. Introverted, solitary, and intellectual, he's content in his quiet life of research and study, never seeking fulfillment through social interaction. Even with others watching over him, he's never needed anyone to share his life with. It's not until his comfortable, predictable world is upended that he realizes his heart might want more than endless spell casting and potion making. Forced to cohabitate with someone with nowhere else to go, he realizes it's nice to have someone to talk to, someone to share time with. It feels good to come home to someone waiting for him. Maybe he still doesn't need anyone. But it's comforting to want them there anyway.

Adrift in an unfamiliar world without identity or memories to anchor him, Ryota struggles to find meaning in a life devoid of context. He's grateful he's still alive, but he sure would like to know why he was in the forest to begin with. Appreciative of the hospitality he's been granted, he takes the opportunity to rest and recover, not knowing when his memory might return and change his life once more. He never could have anticipated the truth when it does find him, though, and he's devastated to find himself on the wrong side of the battle lines from the man he's grown to adore. Finally knowing where he came from, Ryota's torn by the agony of also knowing where he belongs and understanding that he must choose to abandon one side or the other. In the war between duty and loyalty, his heart will be the casualty.
